Who You Believe You Are Runs Your Habits
We tend to act in line with the story we tell about ourselves. Change the story gradually, with evidence, and the habits begin to follow.
In a nutshell
- Our behaviour tends to line up with who we think we are.
- Every small action is a vote for the person you are becoming.
- Identity changes through accumulated evidence, not declarations.
Habits are downstream of identity
Try to become "someone who exercises" while quietly believing you are "someone who never sticks to anything", and you will feel a constant tug-of-war. Most of us are strongly motivated to act in line with the story we tell about ourselves. So the story quietly writes the habits.
Votes, not verdicts
Writer James Clear, in Atomic Habits, describes every action as a vote for the kind of person you want to be. One vote does not decide an election. But a pile of small votes — a walk, a page, a calm reply — begins to shift what feels normal.

Book Your Free Strategy SessionHow to rewrite the story
- Write the identity sentence. "I am someone who keeps promises to myself." Keep it believable, and slightly ahead of where you are.
- Collect evidence. Each day, note one small action that fits the sentence. Tiny counts.
- Be specific. "I am a calm communicator" is clearer when it is tied to moments: "I paused before replying."
- Let setbacks be data, not verdicts. A missed day does not prove the old story. One vote does not decide the result.
You do not need to feel like the new you first. You need to act like them, a little, often.
The Replace step in action
When you interrupt an old pattern, something has to take its place — and the best replacement is one that fits the person you are becoming. That is why Replace and Reinforce matter so much: they turn a clever technique into a new normal.
Pause and reflect
If your habits are votes, who have you been voting for lately?
