The Pattern Behind the Pattern: How Your Greatest Strengths Become Your Biggest Obstacles

The most painful and least understood truth in coaching: the patterns that are destroying your results were once the very strategies that created your success.

The Paradox Every High Performer Faces

After coaching thousands of individuals across 30 years, one pattern appears more consistently than any other: the behaviours creating the most significant problems in someone's life are almost always the same behaviours that created their greatest successes.

This is not a coincidence. It is a structural feature of how human beings develop, and understanding it is essential to creating lasting change.

How Adaptive Strategies Become Maladaptive Patterns

Every behavioural pattern begins as a solution. A child in an unpredictable household learns hypervigilance — constant monitoring of the emotional environment — because it genuinely helps them navigate danger. A young professional learns to work excessive hours because in their early career, that effort genuinely differentiated them. An entrepreneur learns to maintain total control of every detail because in the early stages of a business, that control genuinely prevented catastrophic errors.

These are not pathological responses. They are intelligent adaptations to specific contexts. The problem arises when the context changes but the strategy doesn't.

The pattern doesn't know that the situation changed. It only knows that it worked — once. And so it keeps running, in contexts where it no longer serves, with increasing negative consequence.

The Three Contexts Where Strengths Become Liabilities

Clinical and organisational psychology research identifies three primary contexts where previously adaptive strategies reliably become destructive:

  • Scale transitions: When someone's scope of responsibility expands significantly — promotion, business growth, relationship deepening — the strategies that worked at the smaller scale often fail or actively harm at the larger one.
  • Relationship transitions: Strategies developed for one type of relationship (e.g., competitive professional relationships) that are unconsciously applied to different relationship types (e.g., intimate partnerships or parenting).
  • Success transitions: Counterintuitively, achieving major goals frequently destabilises the behavioural patterns that created the success, leaving the person at their most vulnerable to self-sabotage precisely when they appear most successful.

Why This Is So Difficult to See

The reason these patterns are so difficult to identify and change is that they are associated with a positive identity narrative. "I'm thorough." "I'm driven." "I'm loyal." "I have high standards." These narratives are not wrong — they describe real qualities. But they also serve as shields that prevent the person from seeing when those qualities are running as patterns rather than choices.

Coaching that challenges the behaviour without honouring the original adaptive function of the pattern almost always fails. The person experiences it as an attack on their identity, not an invitation to evolve it.

The Coaching Approach That Works

Effective work with strength-based patterns follows a specific sequence. First, acknowledge the intelligence of the original adaptation — the pattern worked, and that matters. Second, identify the contexts in which it continues to serve versus the contexts in which it no longer does. Third, distinguish between the value (thoroughness, drive, loyalty, high standards) and the pattern (perfectionist paralysis, workaholism, enabling, impossible expectations).

The goal is not to eliminate the strength. It is to make it a choice rather than a compulsion. And that transformation — from automatic pattern to conscious capability — is precisely what the Pattern Interruption Revolution™ is designed to create.

These ideas are for general inspiration and are not medical or psychological advice.
